春酒 and 開工 catering: the first gatherings after Lunar New Year

How 開工 on the first working day and the 春酒 spring banquet differ from a 尾牙, when they happen in 2027, and what food suits each.

Three different gatherings

Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Before it comes the 尾牙, the year-end thank-you party. After it come two lighter gatherings: 開工, the first working day back, when many companies hold a short ceremony and hand out red envelopes (開工紅包), and 春酒, the spring banquet in the weeks after the holiday. The Lantern Festival (元宵) falls on 20 February 2027, and many 春酒 are held around or after it.

開工: short, cheerful, in the office

開工 is usually brief: a word from the boss, red envelopes, maybe a toast, then back to work. Food is a tea table or light refreshments in the office, ready before everyone gathers. Sweet items with good meanings suit the day, and so do snacks people can take back to their desks. Drop-off or a set-up tea table is usually enough.

春酒: a relaxed celebration

A 春酒 has less ceremony than a 尾牙: fewer awards, often no big lucky draw, and sometimes clients or partners are invited to thank them for the past year. That makes it a good fit for a buffet or a reception with finger food, in the office, a rented space or a restaurant. Staffed service suits evenings with guests from outside the company.

Planning tips

  • Book early if your 春酒 date is close to the holiday, when many companies plan the same weeks.
  • If you hold both a 尾牙 and a 春酒, vary the format: a banquet for one, a reception for the other.
  • Collect dietary needs again; teams and guest lists change over the holiday.
  • Confirm building access for the first days after the holiday, when some offices open later.
