What is the difference between a bento, a meal box and a buffet?
In Taiwan the words overlap. A 便當 is usually a rice-based lunch box with a main dish and sides. A 餐盒 is the wider word, and also covers sandwich boxes, pasta, Japanese-style boxes and tea-break boxes for meetings (會議餐盒). A buffet (自助餐外燴) is a set of shared dishes in trays, kept warm, that people serve themselves from.
We arrange meal boxes and buffets. A classic rice 便當 style can be built from the rice dishes on the menu, such as braised pork rice or gyudon. We do not run traditional banquet tables with on-site cooking (辦桌).
Which format fits which situation?
| Format | Best for | Serving | Budget per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meal boxes | Meetings, trainings, desk lunches | None, one box each | NT$300 to 500 |
| Drop-off buffet | Team lunches of 20 or more | Your team sets out and clears | NT$500 to 800 |
| Buffet with setup | Receptions, company parties | We set up and collect serveware | NT$800 to 1,300 |
| Staffed buffet | Formal evenings, 尾牙 | Staff serve, replenish and clear | NT$1,300+ |
These are typical ranges per person, not a quote. Menu, date, venue and service level move the exact number, and the exact quote follows by email.
When are meal boxes the better choice?
- People eat at different times or in different rooms.
- The meeting is short and nobody should queue.
- You want each person's diet and name on their own box.
- There is no table, power or space for a buffet.
- Your budget is in the lowest range and you want a predictable cost per head.
When is a buffet worth it?
- Guests eat together and like to choose and take seconds.
- The group is 20 or more, so shared trays are cheaper to serve than 20 separate boxes.
- The meal is part of an event, such as a reception, a 尾牙 or a farewell.
- You want the table to look generous and be ready when the event starts.
Can you mix boxes and a buffet in one order?
Yes. A common pattern is a buffet for most guests and a few labelled boxes for vegetarian, allergy or late-arriving guests. Another is boxes on weekdays and a buffet for the monthly all-hands lunch. Tell us the split when you ask for the quote and compare up to three options side by side.
How do you decide in five minutes?
- How many people, and will they eat together? Under 20 and separate: boxes.
- Is there a space and a time slot for a table? If not: boxes.
- Is it a celebration? Lean to a buffet with setup or staffed service.
- Check the diets. Boxes make labelling easy; for a buffet, ask for labelled dishes.
- Send the guest count, date, venue and food-ready time, and compare the quotes.
